The advantages of wool as an intermediate layer are that it retains heat even when it gets damp, it insulates well and is temperature-regulating.
Whether it is a thin wool sweater that can also be used as the innermost layer or a thick wool sweater or woolen jacket, the garment will always have the insulating effect that an intermediate layer should have.
